Checkers Sixty60

Checkers Sixty60

Checkers Sixty60 is one of South Africa’s leading grocery delivery apps. As part of the design team, I led the redesign of the search and navigation experience, addressing key user pain points related to product discovery and browsing. The goal was to make it easier and faster for users to find what they need, while bringing back the in-store shopping experience through visual storytelling and structured navigation.

Concept

Concept

The concept focused on enhancing discoverability and reducing friction in the shopping experience. User research revealed that customers often struggled to locate products quickly and that browsing felt less intuitive compared to an in-store experience. My design direction aimed to reintroduce that familiarity, making shopping feel visual, guided, and inspiring.

Research

Research

Working with the UX and product team, we analyzed search heatmaps, drop-off data, and session recordings to pinpoint where users struggled. It became clear that the main challenge was category depth and search filtering — users weren’t finding products fast enough or browsing beyond the first few results. I benchmarked global e-commerce leaders like Amazon, Instacart, and Woolworths Online to identify search and layout patterns that encourage exploration while keeping the flow efficient.

For the app’s development, I implemented a powerful AI engine that learns from user data to predict coffee preferences accurately. This system constantly improves, providing more accurate and tailored suggestions as users continue to engage with the app. The app was built with speed and reliability in mind, ensuring that the order process is as seamless as possible, with real-time updates and an efficient checkout flow. I also focused on integration with local coffee vendors, ensuring a wide range of coffee choices while maintaining ease of access and fast delivery times.

Collaborating closely with developers, I provided detailed component specs, motion guidance, and accessibility notes. Prototypes were tested internally for performance and usability, ensuring seamless integration into the app’s existing design system. The result was a faster, more intuitive shopping experience, with users reporting quicker search times and higher engagement with featured categories. The redesign not only improved usability metrics but also reinforced Sixty60’s position as the most user-friendly grocery app in South Africa.
